As We Scatter – Light of the World – John 8 & 9
Reflecting:
Below are questions related to this week’s sermon for you to talk about and reflect on either on your own or with a friend or group.
- In John 8:12 Jesus identifies who he is by saying: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” What is your understanding of the meaning of this statement?
- Several thoughts concerning what Jesus meant when he said he is the light of the world were presented in the sermon. Put in your own words what is meant by each idea. Then identify which idea resonates with you the most today and why?
- Jesus is the Light that Leads
- Jesus is the Light that Identifies
- Jesus is the Light that Creates
- Three groups of people were identified as having trouble seeing clearly. Which group are you most like and why?
- Pharisees – whose habits, traditions and rules defined how they saw God.
- Jews – whose culture and background defined how they saw themselves and others
- Disciples – whose assumptions about God were keeping them from seeing what God wanted to do.
Digging Deeper:
As you go into the week, here are some Scripture passages to read and study that you can do with a friend or family member to help you gain a greater understanding of what it means to know Jesus as our Bread of Life. We are going to use the Discovery Bible Study (DBS) method for studying and understanding these passages. A DBS study focuses on letting God speak through His Word on its own, without the help of a commentary or some external tool. The DBS method involves getting together with at least one other person to discuss a passage of Scripture using the following steps/questions:
- Read the passage twice and then put into your own words what happens in the passage.
- Ask the following question: What does this passage reveal about God (Father, Son or Spirit)?
- Consider what the passage reveals about us by asking the question: What does this passage reveal about humanity?
- After discussing what the passage reveals about God and about us, reflect on the following question: If this is really God’s word, what changes would I have to make in my life?
- Lastly, think about who you can share what you’ve learned with and commit to talking with them within the next few days.
