Who is Jesus?

Who is Jesus? That’s a question many have; maybe you do, too. At Trailview Alliance Church, we consider Jesus central to everything we do. This is because we believe the following about Jesus:

Jesus Reveals the Truth About God to Us

Many have views about God; ideas and thoughts about what he’s like and what he does. We believe that Jesus reveals the truth about God. One of the New Testament authors writes:

We believe Jesus is fully God, and when we read about Jesus and how he interacts with people, we see God’s character and nature revealed. To know God means knowing Jesus, because Jesus reveals God’s glory, goodness, and love to us.

Jesus Reveals the Truth About Us

We believe that Jesus is fully God and fully human. One of the New Testament authors describes Jesus as becoming human and moving into the neighbourhood (John 1:14 MSG), and still another describes Jesus’ humanity in the following way:

Being fully human means Jesus faced all the emotions, struggles, and challenges we do, yet unlike us, he did not sin (2 Corinthians 5:21 NLT). Jesus reveals to us what true humanity looks like and how we were created to live (Ephesians 4:13 NLT). As we read about Jesus in the Gospels, we see how far we have fallen short of God’s way of living (Romans 3:23 NLT) and how disconnected we are from God.

Jesus Connects Us With God

We are disconnected from God because of sin (Isaiah 59:2 NLT); thankfully, God is not content to leave us like this. Jesus became human not only to show us how to live, but also to take our place, pay the debt our sin has caused, and reconnect us with God (1 Peter 3:18 NLT). One of Jesus’ disciples wrote about Jesus that,

We believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive our sins and, in doing so, his sacrifice reconciled us to God. Those who accept the gift of forgiveness Jesus’ sacrifice provides are declared righteous before God because Jesus took our sin and, in exchange, gave us his righteousness. The author of Romans describes us moving from disconnection with God to having deep connection, saying,

Jesus Gives Us Life

Reconciling or reconnecting our relationship with God is not the only reason Jesus came to earth. Jesus’ deep desire is that we would experience the life that we were created to live, but which sin has stolen from us. The enemy of God and our soul has deceived us and tried to steal the life we were created for, but Jesus restores that life.

The life that Jesus gives us is made possible through his death and resurrection. Jesus’ death pays the debt our sin has incurred. Jesus’ resurrection proves that he is who he said he is (Romans 1:4 NLT) and that when we accept him as our Saviour and surrender to his leadership, we are raised to new life. About the resurrection, the author of Romans writes,

Jesus’ resurrection gives us new life, and new life brings new purpose.

Jesus Gives Us Purpose

The truth is, you were created with purpose and a plan (Ephesians 2:10 NLT), and despite sin and the enemy of our soul, Jesus’ death and resurrection give us new life. The author of 2 Corinthians writes,

Jesus has given us life and purpose, and it all begins when we accept him as the leader and Saviour of our life.

Jesus Shows Us How to Live

Jesus has not only given us life and purpose, but he also shows us how to live. One of Jesus’ closest disciples, Peter, wrote to a group of people a lot like us, living after Jesus ascended into heaven, that,

Jesus is our example of what life lived in connection to God, in friendship with God, looks like. He is our example for what life lived with purpose and direction looks like.

Jesus desires that we become like him in every way, responding to life’s ups and downs as he did and helping others connect with God as he did. To this end, through the person, presence, and power of the Spirit, Jesus helps us live the life he envisions.

Jesus Is Coming Again So We Can Be With Him

The night before Jesus died for the forgiveness of our sins, Jesus told his disciples that he was going away to prepare a place for them and that he would come again and take them to be with him (John 14:2-3 NLT). This promise wasn’t just for his disciples; it is also for those who call Jesus their Lord and Saviour today. We believe that when Jesus returns, all Jesus’ disciples who have died, along with those still living, will be “caught up” to be with him forever (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 NLT).

We believe that Jesus will return when everyone in the world has had the opportunity to hear and respond to the Good News of who Jesus is. Jesus said,

As Jesus’ disciples today, we are compelled to share the Good News of who Jesus is. We want everyone to know the truth that we have discovered and to be with him when he returns.

Jesus is truly God, so through him we can truly know God; and Jesus is truly human, so through him we can become truly human. That is why we believe Jesus is at the center of everything, and we’ve put him at the center of everything we do at Trailview.
